How To Properly Clear and Use Your Snorkel When Scuba Diving

When you are out enjoying scuba diving, water will get into your snorkel, either through splashing or submersion. It's very important, therefore, to know how to get water out of your snorkel in order to allow you to breathe properly during your scuba diving adventure. Clearing your snorkel while scuba diving is not difficult, but it takes a bit of practice, so run through the process a few times until you feel comfortable. Until it feels like second nature, you are not ready.

First, intentionally fill your snorkel by putting your face in the water, taking a deep breath through the snorkel and then submerging deeply enough to fill the snorkel. Begin to resurface and when your snorkel is above the water blow a blast of air to force the water out. You do not want to take in a big breath until you know that your snorkel is clear, so slowly inhale. You may need another blast to fully empty the snorkel. As soon as you are breathing freely, you are ready to dive!

Before going underwater, always check that your snorkel is not blocked. Once in the water, breathe gently through your snorkel. This is important because you do not want to inadvertently suck up water. Practice this technique over and over until it becomes second nature to you.

Whenever you are in the water, you need to be relaxed. Be confident and be prepared in the water. It's important that you always have presence of mind so that you will not panic when something goes wrong underwater. You will be safer and have a lot more fun if you know how to handle potential emergencies.
