How To Select A Snorkel Set

The snorkel set is probably the most common diving accessory you can buy. Whether you are scuba diving or snorkeling, a great snorkel set can make a world of difference in the comfort and quality of your dives. There really are two different kinds of snorkel sets. The first set includes a mask, snorkel, and swim fins. The other kind includes a dive mask and snorkel only. Clearly, the term "snorkel set" can mean two different things.

Snorkel sets are inexpensive because their individual components are very simple. The snorkel itself is really nothing more than a simple curved plastic tube of approximately 16" that allows swimmers to breathe while looking into the water. Newer versions of the snorkel may include a sump to allow accumulated water to drain.

The dive mask is also a very simple component and usually comes in one of two different designs. In the first design it will have one large area to see through. In the second design, the mask will have two separate viewing areas, similar to optical glasses in design. Which design you decide to go with is really just a personal preference. Either one is fine; it doesn't matter which one you choose. Another thing to consider is that some dive masks are available with a special coating on the optics to eliminate glare. The only way to tell which one will be best for you is to try one several different configurations until you find one you are comfortable with.

The swim fins are the last part of the snorkel set. They come in a wide variety of size and features. Some swim fins are made to be very rigid for extra propulsion while swimming while others are designed to be semi-flexible to make walking on the shore easier.

Since there are so many different styles and features to choose from, you will definitely want to shop around and check out the different options before making a snorkel set purchase. When it comes to your scuba diving gear, you definitely want gear that is very comfortable.
